Seven rugby matches today

2010-03-06 00:00

SCHOOL rugby fixtures have never started as early as they have been scheduled in 2010.

The early start to the school year and the Soccer World Cup have dictated to schools the necessity of the early start if they are going to play their normal fixtures by the end of the second quarter.

So today many schools have scheduled rugby and hockey trials, but there are seven rugby games at the beginning of the season. Hopefully the weather is not too hot and if so referees are sensible enough to have frequent water breaks.

The big game of the day is at Michaelhouse, where they will host Westville. Since Westville won in 2009, Michaelhouse will want to reverse the result to get their season off to a positive start. Where the visitors may have a slight advantage, perhaps negated by playing on Meadows, is their amount of practice time in comparison with Michaelhouse.

The match will be keenly watched by other schools who are not playing today, but will try to pick up on specific patterns of play used by two of the better 2009 teams in the province.

Kearsney will be hosting Voortrekker and will be hoping to use the game to see possible weaknesses and where to concentrate the coaching.

The Kearsney 2nd XV play against Port Natal and as Voortrekker play them later in the season they will be keen to pick up on what they see in the match.

Vryheid will take on Richardsbaai.

Fixtures: Michaelhouse vs Westville; Kearsney vs Voortrekker; Kearsney II vs Port Natal; Richardsbaai vs Vryheid; Gelofte vs Greytown; Carter vs Alexandra; Weston vs Linpark
