Sevens: Durban hosts schools competition

2009-08-24 00:00

WITH the rugby season over, some athletics and a frenetic set of soccer fixtures in a short time, many schools are looking at rugby sevens as being a sporting alternative for the boys during this term.

The Midlands Rugby Academy is running a sevens tournament. Today Glenwood in Durban host the @lantic Sevens competition. This has grown in popularity over the last few years and there are 20 schools playing on three fields at Glenwood.

The schools have been divided into four pools and between 8 am and 1 pm, the schools in each pool will play one another. The semi-finals then take place with finals in four sections, shield, bowl, plate and cup, taking place from 2.50 pm until 4.30 pm.

The better KZN schools represented are hosts Glenwood, Westville, Kearsney and Maritzburg College. From outside the province there are teams from Overkruin, Middelburg HS, Excelsior, Parys and HTS Tuine.

Pool A winners will likely be either Middelburg or Maritzburg College. In Pool B, Glenwood and Kearsney will be the favourites. Pool C sees either Westville or Overkruin as the winners and in arguably the weakest of the pools, Pool D, Port Natal should be favourites.

Pool A: George Campbell, Maritzburg College, Middelburg HS, Overkruin 2, Sarel Cilliers

Pool B: Glenwood, HTS Tuine, Kearsney, KZN Development, Northwood

Pool C: Clifton, DHS, Kokstad , Overkruin 1, Westville

Pool D: Estcourt, Excelsior, Parys, Pinetown, Port Natal
