Sevontein prison hit by yet another accident

2014-08-20 00:00

ANOTHER accident occurred at the Sevontein Correctional Centre on Monday night.

This happened barely two months after four-year-old Calym “Ziggy” Isaacs was hit by a private vehicle driven by a warder inside the prison premises and died on his way to hospital.

Sources said a private contractor’s truck overturned, critically injuring three people.

They also complained that it took 90 minutes for oxygen to be made available to the injured.

Prison medical personnel allegedly only arrived much later. “One of the more severely hurt cases is an off-duty official. [I’m] sad to say that this farm still doesn’t take their lack of health and safety seriously,” a source said.

KwaZulu-Natal acting regional commissioner, Dumisani Mbanjwa said the accident is not linked to the Department of Correctional Services even though the contractor, Velile Business Enterprise, was carrying out civil works and maintenance within the premises.

“The incident took place just inside the premises [in a vehicle] belonging to a private company,” said Mbanjwa.

He said, “As a national department we are obliged to render first aid assistance due to the proximity and remoteness of the area, utilising professional nurses who were on scene to save life.”

He said the department will investigate the matter, and that an official, M.Z. Mkhize, was slightly injured in the accident.
