Sevontein prison: warders held for diesel theft

2013-01-30 00:00

TWO people believed to be warders at the Sevontein Prison have been arrested in connection with the theft of diesel, which is allegedly rife at the prison.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said details of the two suspects would be released today.

“At this stage, all we can confirm is that two people have been arrested for the theft of diesel,” said Jeevan.

The Witness reported yesterday that there was a confrontation between a senior official in KwaZulu-Natal Correctional Services Department and a warder at the prison last week.

The warder was suspected of allegedly stealing diesel.

It is alleged that the senior official had made a surprise late-night visit to the prison last week. He found a car parked in the yard, asked what it was doing there and went to investigate.

A confrontation ensued between the official, his bodyguard and the warder.

“The senior official asked who the man was and what he was doing there at that time of the night. That man responded by asking the senior official who he was and an argument ensued,” said a source.

The official and his bodyguards allegedly drew their guns and the warder fled.

A 20-litre container of diesel was recovered.

“The theft of diesel has been a real problem here. The day before the incident there was theft,” said another source.

A spokesperson for the Correctional Services Department, Nokuthula Zikhali, declined to comment, saying she was not aware that someone had been arrested.

“It is hard to speak on the matter as I am not even sure that there are people who have been arrested,” said Zikhali.
