Sew generous: readers give saris

2012-09-24 00:00

TWO weeks ago, The Witness ran an article about the goodwill organisation, “Saris for good Karma”, which uses donated used saris for an empowerment project.

The project aims to teach poor women how to sew accessories like bags and cushions, using the beautiful fabric from old saris.

Project manager Kanchana Moodliar was delighted with the overwhelming generosity of Witness readers, who donated their unwanted saris to the project.

Five black bags of saris were collected, she said.

“People have been generous and we are very thankful.

“We are now looking for new premises for our project so we can operate on a full-time basis, and we are looking for sponsors who can sponsor the cost of the women completing the course.

“It costs R300 for each woman to do the training. That includes their material and taxi fare daily,” Moodliar said.

Those who are successful are encouraged to get sponsors to help them buy a sewing machine, which costs R800.

Moodliar said her organisation had received a consignment of sewing machines to use for teaching, but it was sharing space with a fashion production house.

As it lacks ongoing funding, it hires a trainer to teach the sewing courses when it has money.

In the pipeline is a project to get Bollywood stars to donate their eye-catching outfits, which will be used to make designer couture garments for auction, and to raise awareness of their project.

Moodliar says: “I believe if it is done with good intentions, then it will have a great outcome.”
