Sewran: third suspect held

2013-07-06 00:00

A THIRD man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Pietermaritzburg doctor Bhavish Sewram.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed yesterday that the man was arrested in Pietermaritzburg and would be held in Durban over the weekend. He will appear in court on Monday.

Sewram was gunned down outside his medical practice in Chota Motala Road on May 13.

The man suspected of firing the fatal shots at the doctor, Sabelo Advocate Dlamini (24), and his co-accused, Mfaniseni Wiseman Nxumalo (34), appeared in court on Wednesday, a day after their arrest. They were remanded in custody until July 9. The court ordered that they be detained at the Isipingo police cells.

Sewram died at the scene after he was shot three times, in the neck, arm and back, by a hooded gunman as he was leaving his surgery. The Witness reported that the shooting followed a series of threats and an attack on the doctor and his family, who claimed in October last year that they were the victims of a vendetta.

This involved graffiti painted on the walls of his home and surgery, threatening phone calls and allegedly false charges of sexual assault and possession of drugs being laid against Sewram He also laid a complaint with the police following an incident on October 24, when rubber bullets were allegedly fired at him from a paintball gun.
