Sex survey: Stressed-out South Africans say they’re bonking more to beat the blues

As times are getting tougher, South Africans are seeking escapist comfort from more amorous activities.

According to the results of this year’s annual Sexpo sex survey, which interviewed 1 000 South African men and women between the ages of 24 and 35 during May and June, it appears that South Africans are getting naughtier.

Sexpo’s Silas Howarth said South Africans are having more sex, with 72% reporting sex once a week (up from 65%) and 16% of respondents have sex less than once a month. “Monogamy remains high on our sexual agendas, with 78% still claiming absolute commitment.”

The current economic climate, the rocketing fuel price and other social stresses add to a need for escapism.

“Sensuality, sexual stimulation and naughty thoughts provide a great escape from the pressures we face daily,” he says.

More than 54% of men admit to enjoying pornography, 26% said they would indulge in a threesome and 22% claimed they had already experienced one.

Women’s fantasies usually include their partner only, with 57% of women leaning toward sex in a public place and 80% still agree that they would love to acquire pole-dancing or erotic dancing skills.

Last year’s survey showed that 30% of women questioned said they have had a bisexual experience; this year’s results indicate similar numbers, while 32% admit to having thought about it at least once.
