Sex worker jailed for stabbing non-payer

2011-03-30 00:00

A MOTHER of two who pleaded guilty to stabbing a man to death during a scuffle after he failed to honour his agreement to pay her for sex, was sentenced to an effective eight years’ imprisonment yesterday by high court Judge Mohini Murugasen.

The judge sentenced Nonhlanhla Mbuyazi (28) to eight years’ imprisonment for the murder of Mhlahleni Mnguni and to one year’s imprisonment for theft of his cellphone at Mfekayi near Mtubatuba on February 19.

The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently.

In favour of the accused, the judge said Mbuyazi had been unarmed at the time and she had attacked Mnguni with his own knife when he provoked her, both by pushing her and refusing to honour the agreement he had with her.

She said Mbuyazi’s action was based on anger and happened in the heat of the moment.

On the other hand, the judge said Mnguni was stabbed with a great degree of force. This was borne out by the post-mortem which showed he suffered a fractured rib. There was also a “blunt force injury to the skull” that was not explained.

Mnguni’s decomposing body was found days later.

The judge said Mbuyazi never reported the murder, despite her own version that he was still alive when she left him at the scene.
