2010-04-14 00:00

A 21-YEAR-OLD student at the FET College in Pietermaritzburg appeared in the magistrate’s court for the second time yesterday in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a fellow student.

He was granted bail of R1 000 by Magistrate Divesh Mootheram.

The accused, who cannot be named until he has pleaded to the charge because it involves an incident of a sexual nature, indicated in an affidavit used in support of his bail application that he intends to plead not guilty.

He said he is studying Tourism at the FET College and needed to get back to his studies “urgently” as he had been in custody for a month following his arrest and has missed out on classes.

He is charged with sexually assaulting a female student at the college at the beginning of March this year by “forcing her to touch his penis”, as well as with common assault for “throwing a book in her face”.

The case, which attracted a large crowd, was postponed to May 13.
