Sexy chat? lonely caller gets burned on a steamy hotline

2009-12-14 00:00

EVER felt like phoning for a sexy chat?

The silky voice on the phone might be soothing, but be warned: whether you dial the numbers advertised in the classifieds from a landline or cellphone, the rates are exorbitant.

A local man, who asked not to be named, found out the hard way. Sometime in November the “lonely” man was home alone as his wife was away for some weeks.

The man claims that he dialled a chat number, not knowing that it is a sex chat number, although he found it in the classified section of a newspaper under the “adults only” column.

“I just wanted to chat as I was lonely. The lady on the other end started talking in a sexy tone,” the man said.

He said he spent one minute and 41 seconds on the line.

Early this month he received a call from a woman who identified herself as Joy, saying he owed R960 for the call. She explained that they charge R9,50 per second.

Now the “lonely” man feels he is being ripped off.

In an attempt to get an explanation on the charges from Joy, The Witness phoned a landline number listed along with the cell number the man phoned.

A woman on the other end started to use her alluring tone, but was cut short and asked to put Joy on the phone. No luck there, because Joy works after hours only.

It was discovered by The Witness that calls to the landline are charged at R100 per minute.

And there’s no recourse for the chastened caller. Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said this is a civil matter. that must be sorted out between the parties.
