Sharks: John Smit as new CEO?

2013-04-16 00:00

THE appointment of former Springbok captain John Smit as the Sharks new chief executive officer was scheduled to be rubber-stamped at a council meeting at King’s Park last night.

Smit, with no experience in rugby administration but highly respected around the world, is to take over from veteran Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl. Van Zyl is in his last year with the Sharks before taking retirement, but news of his sudden departure was leaked last week. Even members of the Sharks board were unaware that the decision had been made.

Stephen Saad, chairperson of the Sharks board of directors, would not comment on the leaked report last week, but said a media release will be “issued on Tuesday [today]” after a council meeting.

Van Zyl was due to leave his job in February.
