Sharks call on Gauteng player reserves for Down Under tour

2013-04-20 00:00

SHARKS coach John Plumtree has had to dip into player reserves north of the border in coming up with his 26-man touring squad for New Zealand and Australia.

The squad leave tomorrow on their month’s tour, which involves games against the title-holding Chiefs, Highlanders, Reds and Force.

Three players will join the Sharks on loan. Flank Derick Minnie and his wing/fullback team-mate Andries Coetzee have been borrowed from the Lions, while the former Sharks age group centre Piet Lindeque returns from Pretoria, where he has been playing for Tukkies and the Blue Bulls in the Vodacom Cup.

Injuries have cut a swathe through the Sharks’ ranks. Willem Alberts, Jacques Botes, Bismarck du Plessis, Butch James, Tim Whitehead. Lwazi Mvovo and Louis Ludik are not in the tour party.

Bok number eight Ryan Kankowski has been dropped from the squad, but wing JP Pietersen, who will miss today’s game against the Cheetahs in Durban because of an ankle injury, has been included.

It is hoped that Alberts and possibly Bismarck du Plessis could join the Sharks for the Australian leg of their tour, but their return has been “just around the corner” for some weeks now.
