Sharks coaches make the expected four changes

THERE are the expected four changes to the Sharks starting line-up for tomorrow evening’s Currie Cup outing against the Blue Bulls at King’s Park.

Odwa Ndungane, back from his hamstring strain, takes over from young Sizo Maseko on the wing.

The other changes see scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, hooker Craig Burden and lock Peet Marais promoted from the bench as the Sharks coaches rotate their squad.

Charl McLeod, Kyle Cooper and Edwin Hewitt drop down to the bench this weekend.

Backrower Tembu Mtembu, nursing a groin strain, is replaced by Northwood High School product Justin Downey, who has spent three seasons with Griquas — and played Super Rugby for the Cheetahs — before returning to Durban for this year’s Currie Cup season.

Coach Brad Macleod-Henderson said providing young talent with opportunities without breaking the continuity in the team was a fine balancing act.

“You want to give guys chances but you also don’t want to break momentum.”

He said that Reinach, Burden and Marais had all performed commendably when coming off the bench in recent weeks, “and deserved their chance to start”.

Fullback SP Marais, who left the field during the win over the Free State Cheetahs last Friday, has been passed fit. Furthermore, the 20-year-old Fred Zeilinga again starts ahead of Butch James at flyhalf.

Sharks team: 15. SP Marais, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Louis Ludik, 12. Heimar Williams, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Fred Zeilinga, 9. Cobus Reinach, 8. Jacques Botes (captain),7. Jean Deysel, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Marco Wentzel, 4. Peet Marais, 3. Wiehahn Herbst, 2. Craig Burden, 1. Dale Chadwick . Replacements: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Rayno Gerber, 18. Edwin Hewitt, 19. Justin Downey, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Butch James, 22. Jaco van Tonder.
