Sharks scoop Bothma in two-year deal

2014-11-12 00:00

AFTER some massive performances in the Currie Cup, it is no surprise that burly Pumas eighthman Renaldo Bothma has been headhunted by bigger unions.

The good news is that the Sharks have managed to scoop up the 25-year-old. He returns to the union having attended the Sharks Academy in 2009.

Bothma has signed a two-year deal with the Durban outfit but is set to return to the Pumas after his stint with the Sharks.

The South African-born Namibian is also set for World Cup duty with Namibia next year, making 2015 his biggest year yet. He will still return to the Pumas for Currie Cup duty, although he will most likely be at the World Cup in England during the competition.

“I am very excited about joining the Sharks and the prospect of participating in Super Rugby. This experience will certainly be a highlight of my rugby career thus far,” Bothma said.

Bothma is set to join the Sharks when they begin their pre-season training next week. Sharks CEO John Smit said that Bothma is an exciting prospect and will add more depth to the Sharks Super Rugby squad.

“We have witnessed Renaldo’s skill and explosiveness during this year’s Currie Cup competition and a player of his calibre will no doubt bolster our Super Rugby squad. We welcome him to Durban and trust that his stay at the Sharks will be a memorable one,” Smit said.
