Sharks stock up on Boks for tough away Lions challenge

SPRINGBOK lock Alistair Hargreaves, suffering from a chest infection, will miss the Sharks’ big Currie Cup game against the log-leading Lions at Ellis Park.

Hargreaves is the only one of the returning Springboks not included in the match 22, and assistant coach Grant Bashford said yesterday the Sharks have been medically advised not to select him.

“He has had ‘flu all week and the threat of bronchitis, and we obviously don’t want to risk him at altitude,” said Bashford.

Coach John Plumtree has used all his other returning Springboks and the depth at loose forward has allowed him to select two quality flanks, Jean Deysel and Jacques Botes, on the bench.

Lwazi Mvovo takes over from Odwa Ndungane, his replacement, ironically, in the World Cup squad. Stefan Terblanche is preferred to the out-of-touch Marius Joubert at centre and Charl McLeod is back for Conrad Hoffman at scrumhalf.

Keegan Daniel, rested against the Leopards, rejoins Ryan Kankowski and Marcell Coetzee in the back row and takes over the captaincy.

Plumtree has followed Lions coach John Mitchell in naming five forwards and two backs (Adi Jacobs and Conrad Hoffman) on the bench.

“We decided to go with the 5-2 split early in the week because of the altitude. There are going to be a couple of big games coming up and so it is important to keep the players as fresh as possible.”

Deysel seems certain to play most of the second half with the hard-working Coetzee given a break, while centre Jacobs, another member of the Tri-Nations squad, is expected to make an impact late in the game.

Plumtree expects a major challenge: “They are a lot more organised now and they’re starting to believe in what they’re doing. There is a some consistency to their performances and confidence builds when you get the results.”

The withdrawal of Hargreaves has resulted in Jan Andre Marais joining fellow forwards Botes, who captained the side against the Leopards, Deysel, prop Eugene van Staden and hooker Kyle Cooper on the bench.

The match kicks off at 5.05 pm tomorrow.
