Sharks to pair lineout specialists against Pumas

2011-09-09 00:00

SHARKS coach John Plumtree has bucked tradition in naming two tall lineout specialists in his team to face the Pumas in tomorrow’s Currie Cup game at King’s Park.

Plumtree yesterday named two regular number five locks, Springbok Alistair Hargreaves and Ross Skeate, in his pack rather than pairing a lineout jumper with a strong scrummaging lock.

This is the first time that Skeate, outstanding in last week’s game against the Blue Bulls, will start with Hargreaves in the second row.

Plumtree said, “It’s one of the few opportunities to play Ross and Alistair together at the same time.

“I want to give those guys a start and see how they play together obviously with an eye to looking forward to Super Rugby.

“I need to know how they perform as a combination.”

Conrad Hoffman will start at scrumhalf in place of the injured Charl McLeod while Ross Cronje has been recalled to provide cover off the bench.

“Eugene van Staden and Jean Deysel are both fit to play,” he said of the two forwards who were nursing injuries after the Loftus win.

Plumtree is starting with Wiehahn Herbst rather than Van Staden at tighthead and he has also switched players in the backrow with Deysel moving to flank and captain Keegan Daniel providing pace off the back of the scrum.

Plumtree has also returned to a 4:3 split on the bench with lock Jandre Marais dropping out of the squad and flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter added to the backline options.

The Sharks coach again made a call for the supporters to turn out in their numbers for this mid-afternoon game.

With the Sharks desperate to secure a bonus point for tries, and the Pumas able to play positive, flowing rugby, spectators should be treated to an entertaining contest.

Kick-off is at 3 pm.
