Sharks will have three Boks back for Cheetahs game

THE Sharks, lying second on the Currie Cup log, will have three of their current Springboks available for Saturday’s big game against the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

The Sharks, who bashed their way to a 27-17 win over the tough, committed Pumas in Durban on Friday night, can now call on Ruan Pienaar, Beast Mtawariria and Ryan Kankowski for the Bloem game.

The Springbok selectors yesterday released 11 of the current squad to their provinces to play in the Currie Cup during the three-week break from Tri-Nations duty.

The other players in the squad, who will reassemble for the home leg of the Tri-Nations on August 15, will be rested.

The Springbok squad for the home leg of the tournament will be announced on August 7.

Players who will join their provinces today are Dewald Potgieter, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Flip van der Merwe, Francois Hougaard (Blue Bulls), Ruan Pienaar, Beast Mtawarira, Ryan Kankowski (Sharks), Gio Aplon, Juan de Jongh, Francois Louw (Western Province) and CJ van der Linde (Cheetahs).

In the Currie Cup game in Kimberley on Saturday, Griquas produced a spirited second half — just as they did against the Sharks — to turn a 14-6 half-time deficit into a 26-20 win over the Lions.

And, at Loftus, replacement flyhalf Sias Ebersohn, who had been on the field just 10 minutes, booted a superb, touchline conversion three minutes after the final hooter to give Free State a dramatic 25-23 win over the champion Blue Bulls, who lost their second game in three outings.

The Bulls, who led by eight points with five minutes remaining, first conceded a penalty and, then, after holding their line for 80 minutes, saw replacement Free State hooker and former Shark Skipper Badenhorst cross in the corner to level the scores and hand Ebersohn his moment of glory.

Sharks coach John Plumtree, reflecting on Friday night’s bruising win over the Pumas, said that big flank Jean Deysel could be fit for Bloemfontein. And with Willem Alberts producing a strong showing off the bench against the Pumas, he will be spoilt for choice at loose forward.

Plumtree gave credit to the Pumas, “who came with a plan [and] tackled their hearts out”.
