Sharks win takes its toll on players and fans

2010-03-29 00:00

THE Sharks’ Super 14 victory against the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday has come at a cost with the Sharks losing both their centres, Adi Jacobs and Riaan Swanepoel, to injuries.

JP Pietersen was forced to move to centre in the closing quarter and the revamped backline battled on defence.

Plumtree said that Jacobs’ shoulder injury appeared particularly serious and would probably keep him out for the rest of the Super 14.

Plumtree said that the disrupted Sharks’ backline had lost their edge on attack with the second half injuries but they did fashion easily their best try of the season when they attacked from a Hurricanes kick-off down the short-side.

Terblanche, by way of a change, passed to his support runners instead of kicking, flank Jacques Botes handled twice in the slick move and Pietersen scored.

It took the Sharks in to a 23-12 lead with 14 minutes remaining but the Hurricanes hit back with two tries as they attacked from close to the Sharks line and the scores were level at 26-26 with three minutes remaining. Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis, strong at the breakdown, forced a penalty on the halfway line as the Hurricanes again counter-attacked from deep and Pienaar provided the winning touch.

“Now that was exciting,” Smit said later.

“It was one of those games that take years off you as a player and a coach.”

Not to mention the folks back home.
