Shaun Bartlett confirms appointment as Arrows’ head coach

CAPE TOWN — Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs striker Shaun Bartlett has been appointed as the new head coach of Lamontville Golden Arrows following their relegation to the National First Division (NFD).

The 42-year-old Cape Town-born goal poacher was at the helm of Abafana Besthende on an interim basis following the sacking of former mentor Mark Harrison in December last year.

Speaking exclusively to Sport24 yesterday, the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations golden boot winner confirmed that he will be at the helm of the Durban-based side.

“Yes I am currently the head coach of Golden Arrows,” Bartlett confirmed.

“The club owners want me to stay at the team as head coach to help the club in the National First Division next season.

“We want to rebuild the team so that we can come back to the PSL much stronger but it won’t be easy.”

The former Charlton Athletic forward also said that his charges had a poor start to the last campaign and as a result they could not recover and had to be relegated.

Bartlett said he was not pressured when appointed interim coach alongside Bheka Phakhati although the club was rooted at the bottom of the log.

“I felt no pressure at all although the club needed to survive.

“We were appointed to help the club survive and the owners knew it would be difficult.

“Especially with the fact that we were 10 points behind before the end of the first round,” he added.

Arrows were automatically relegated after they finished last on the log, while Polokwane City will take part in the relegation/promotion playoffs after finishing second from bottom.
