Shelly Beach shark bite that never was

2010-12-22 00:00

RUMOURS of a shark attack on a diver from the Aqua Planet at Shelly Beach in the South Coast turned out to be a medical problem suffered yesterday by a diver who was on the boat.

A biologist with the Natal Sharks Board, Dr Sheldon Dudley, confirmed that there was no shark attack at Shelly Beach.

He said a diver had a medical problem while he was on his boat, but paramedics attended to him and the situation was under control.

Dudley said shark attacks have become a rare event — particularly on protected beaches of the province — because of the shark nets that protect swimmers, surfers and divers alike.

He said the shark nets have played a vital role to reduce the number of shark attacks compared to the number of cases reported in the 1950s. He said the past 30 years have seen only two fatal attacks by sharks off the protected beaches of KwaZulu-Natal.

“We ensure that tourists and the public in general are protected in our beaches because we know that many people use them when they are on holidays,” said Dudley.

However, he warned members of the public to enter the sea only on protected beaches to reduce the risk of being attacked by sharks.
