Shining examples of what exceptional teachers should embody

KWAZULU-NATAL teachers emerged tops at this year’s 15th Annual National Teaching Awards held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on ­Saturday.

Of the KZN winners, Ganasen Reddy of Glenhaven Secondary School in Pine­town achieved the top position in the Lifetime Achievement Category. Topping the Grade R teacher of the year category was Patricia Schrade of Nyanda Primary School in Pietermaritzburg.

Thembisile Mavis Mdlalose, of Thembimfundo Special School in Uthungulu District, won the Professor Kader Asmal Award Category.

Nothando Ndlovu of Dukuza Primary School in the Uthukela District achieved the second position in Primary School Teaching, and Johanna Willemse from Shengeza High School in Umkhanyakude won second place for mathematics teacher of the year.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address at the event and highlighted the importance of teachers in developing society.

He said the teachers honoured at the NTAs should be a shining example of what an exceptional teacher should embody, and all teachers should strive to emulate the example the have set.

KZN Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni congratulated all the winners. “It is the first time KZN did so well, we are so proud of all the winners. We are also encouraging other educators to participate in National Teachers Awards.”

The winners in each category received Samsung tablets and BlackBerry cellphones, double return airline tickets to any domestic destination, while the winners in the top eight categories won a Chevrolet Spark.
