Shobeni: drunk walker plummets to his death

2011-05-31 00:00

A 42-YEAR-OLD man plummeted to his death from a 40-metre-high cliff in the Sdeni Ward in Shobeni, Port Shepstone, on Saturday.

Police in the area said Muzikawupheli Shozi was on his way to one of his homesteads in the area when he took the wrong shortcut towards the cliff where he fell.

Gerald Mfeka, who spoke on behalf of the police in the area, said that they established that Shozi had been drinking and was walking towards one of his homesteads when he fell down the cliff.

“From the information provided we understand that Shozi was drunk.

“He had knocked on one of the neighbour’s homes and because he was drunk and they knew that he had been drinking they simply ignored him and he continued with his journey.

“We also understand that after failing to get the attention of those neighbours he proceeded to his [old] home where he often slept when he had been drinking.

Nobody lives in the homestead any more, but there is still one room that he sleeps in when he had been drinking.”

The police said they believe he was taking a shortcut to the house before he fell to his death.

“The body was discovered by people passing by who then notified the police.

“When police arrived there he was dead. He had sustained serious injuries to his head and to his body.”

The officers said an inquest docket has been opened.

• In yesterday’s Witness it was reported that Shozi (whose name was unknown at the time) had fallen off a cliff in Oribi Gorge. The Witness apologies for the error and the confusion this may have caused.
