‘Shocked’ groom jailed for arson

2013-10-26 00:00

“I’M SHOCKED. I didn’t expect it,” the man who burnt down a wedding venue on his wedding day gasped as he was jailed for four years yesterday.

Jean Greyling (28) of Bloemfontein set fire to the conference hall at the Emoya estate when his booking was cancelled the day before his wedding in July, when he failed to pay a deposit.

“Do I have to go [to jail] now?” he asked. “I didn’t even say goodbye to the children this morning.”

He turned to his wife Lianné (26) and asked: “Are you alright?”, before being led down to the court cells. He will have to serve at least eight months in prison before being eligible for correctional supervision.

“Don’t bring the children to the prison,” he told his wife.

Lianné herself is due in court on Monday in connection with several fraud charges arising out her business importing luxury cars and motorbikes on behalf of buyers. An amount of R5,2 million is allegedly involved.

She said she was proud of her husband for handing himself over to police and for taking his punishment “like a man”.

“We didn’t expect it, but he did prepare himself for prison,” she said.
