Shongweni: Man survives 100-metre fall

2012-09-17 00:00

A MAN who fell or jumped off the Shongweni bridge last night miraculously survived and was rescued in a two-hour operation.

Vanessa Jackson of ER24 said police and paramedics were amazed that the man (35) survived the 100-metre plunge with only a broken arm, possible neck and back injuries and multiple abrasions.

Witnesses called the police after seeing the man go over the bridge. His car was parked nearby.

“Paramedics … were almost certain that the man had been killed after the almost 100-metre fall into the dense bush below, but somehow, miraculously the rescuers who managed to get to him, found him alert and conscious, and complaining of pain,” said Jackson.

Rescuers had to rappel down to the man and pull the man up in a specialised stretcher.

“Almost two hours later, and their patient still in a stable condition, rescuers had managed to bring the man up to the top of the bridge and he was further treated for his injuries,” said Jackson. — WR.
