Shoot-out: Guards stop Hilton robbers

2009-03-15 00:00

A shoot-out was reported between robbers and security guards during a botched housebreaking in Hilton during the early hours of yesterday.

Swift response by PMB Security guards prevented the robbery after a break-in at a residence in Hilton Avenue.

PMB Security spokesman Mark Maitland said his officers were shot at when they responded.

“An alarm signal went off and one of our patrol vehicles that was in the vicinity rushed to the scene. When the officer arrived there, he was shot at, but he could not ascertain where the shots were coming from. He called for backup and other officers arrived immediately. While they were searching for the intruders more shots were fired in their direction and they returned fire.”

Maitland said the suspects were hiding in the yard, but fled when the security guards returned fire. “We arrested one of the suspects.” He said the suspects dropped items including food and appliances when they fled.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram confirmed that one man was arrested by the security company and two are being sought.

It is believed the owner of the house was not in the house when the break-in happened. Maitland said the intruders broke in through the kitchen door. “The alarm was triggered when the door was opened and they smashed the control box in an attempt to switch the alarm off.” He said the box was repaired later.
