‘Shoot-out’ awakens suburb, but cops have no record of gunfire

MYSTERY surrounds a series of apparent gunshots that were heard in Hesketh Drive, Hayfields, in the early hours of Saturday morning. The police say they are unaware of any such incident.

Referring to the alleged shooting, a senior police officer said: “I have spoken to the officer at the local precinct. He tells me that they had not been informed of any shoot-out that took place this past weekend.”

Since Saturday, The Witness has been inundated with calls from concerned residents in the area who say that in the early hours of Saturday morning, they heard a massive exchange of gunfire.

Initially, the residents thought the exchange was between police officers and criminals.

One of the residents, who did not wish to be named, insisted that the police are aware of the matter, as some residents phoned them to find out what was going on.

“A police officer at the Alexandra [Road] police station told us that there was a car hijacking, which caused all the shooting,” said the source.

“It started at about 1 am and carried on for ages.”

Another resident said her household was awoken “by the sounds of gunfire from about 1 am.

“There were people shooting at each other,” she said.

“We first heard the sounds of the siren and then there was a lot of gunfire.

“My husband and I must have counted about 20 shots that were fired during that time.”
