Shoppers dive for cover in robbery

2014-07-29 00:00

A BRAZEN cash-in-transit heist at a Mariannhill retail store saw a gang of 15 heavily armed gunmen making off with nearly R1 million in cash yesterday.

As they fled, gunmen fired their automatic assault rifles into the façade of Reunion Cash and Carry as petrified shoppers ducked for cover.

The attack on the store had been timed to coincide with a cash pick-up by transit security company G4S.

As the security guards were collecting money inside the store, the gang pounced.

A police source close to the investigation, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the press, said that the violent robbery had taken guards by surprise.

“There was nothing that the guards could do as this gang pushed their way into the shop and started firing. Some of them were armed with AK47s and we recovered spent ammunition casings at the scene that confirms this,” he said.

He said that the gunmen fired indiscriminately inside the busy shop as terrified shoppers sought refuge behind shelves and counters. “They got the cash during their raid and then fled from the shop. Some of the gunmen climbed into a bakkie and as they sped away they fired again into the outside of the building. These guys were really bold,” the source added.

Two women suffered minor cuts and bruises from their desperate dives for cover and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Crime scene investigators cordoned off the shop and searched for clues.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that no arrests had been made.
