Show for Beatles fans and music lovers

2009-03-31 00:00

JOHN Lennon once said that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus — that might have been an exaggeration, but what can’t be doubted is that they were one of the best rock and pop bands in the world.

The Fab Four from Liverpool spawned hit after hit, sold over one billion records internationally, and were not afraid to court controversy.

That legacy is celebrated in a new tribute show at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom which stars Paul Green as George Harrison, Cameron Charters as Paul McCartney, Chris Frazer as John Lennon and Michael Brady as Ringo Starr.

Presented by the Australian company, Showtime, Beatlemania charts the band’s progress from their early days in Hamburg, when Pete Best was still behind the drums, through their performances at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, the huge stadium shows in the United States and their encounter with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The show gets under way with a medley of rocking tunes — Twist and Shout, Please Mister Postman and Hippy Hippy Shake, followed in quick succession by Money (That’s What I Want), I Saw Her Standing There, I’m A Loser, and Roll Over Beethoven (which boasts some great guitar work by Green).

The action then moves onto the Cavern Club and hits like Love Me Do, Please Please Me, All My Loving, You Can’t Do That, I Should Have Known Better, I Want to Hold Your Hand, From Me To You, and She Loves You.

After the interval we see the band on the Ed Sullivan Show in the U.S. and later their performance at Shea Stadium in 1965. The latter includes footage from the actual event, complete with hysterical teens.

Again the hits come thick and fast — Eight Days A Week, Day Tripper, the superb Nowhere Man, Paperback Writer, Help!, Can’t Buy Me Love, Hard Day’s Night and plenty from the band’s albums Let It Be, Abbey Road, Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Yellow Submarine and the iconic White Album.

This show is great for both Beatles fans and those who simply enjoy great music. See it if you can.
