Showing off under sunny skies

2008-05-23 00:00

The Royal Agricultural Show (RAS) opened its gates yesterday and thanks to beautiful weather, a steady stream of visitors made exhibitors optimistic of a successful show.

General manager Terry Strachan anticipates that the weekend will bring in large numbers because there is so much great entertainment on offer and especially because Pietermaritzburg is experiencing such “beautiful, sunny and warm weather”.

Yesterday’s visitors had the chance to view displays without the frustration of congested walkways and children experienced a pleasant carnival atmosphere, being able to go on the funfair rides, and parents felt a little less anxious about letting them wander through the bunny display and Crafty Duck farm.

A highlight for the weekend is pop band Freshlyground, who will be appearing on stage in the main arena at around 7 pm. If you are planning to make a day of it, ensure that you bring something warmer as the evening temperature is likely to be a bit chilly.

• There will be no Rooivalk helicopter demonstration from the SAAF this weekend as mentioned previously, but don’t despair, the helicopter will fly in on Thursday and be in action next weekend.

• Gates open open at 9 am. Entry R35 for adults, R18 for pensioners and schoolchildren.
