Showjumping: Durban to host SA’s top riders

2012-07-21 00:00

DURBAN reaffirms itself as the province’s sporting capital by hosting the Showjumping Championships of South Africa from August 1 to 5.

The event is part of the City of Durban Sunshine Tour and has the country’s best riders, plus some from Swaziland, heading for the Cyril Geoghegan Stadium, a stone’s throw from King’s Park.

The tour comprises three events, the World Cup Qualifier which was in June, this one and the KwaZulu-Natal Grand Prix.

Last year’s winner, Jodi Pieters from Drummond, returns to defend her title, fresh from winning the second leg of the World Cup Qualifier at Shongweni, but she will have her work cut out with nine of South Africa’s top 10 ranked riders confirming their entry. These are Gauteng’s Shaun and Gareth Neill, Barry Taylor, Lorette Knowles-Taylor, Ashley Hausberger and Dominey Alexander; Eastern Province’s Jade Hooke and KZN’s Grant Langley.

Local favourites Phillipa Baxter (Howick), Kerry Muir (Mt Edgecombe), Alwin van Breda (La Lucia), Heather Mostert (Hillcrest) and Shongweni’s Michelle Green and Colin Ferreira are also in the mix.

Admission to the event is free on all days and the action is from 9 am to 4 pm daily. Wednesday to Saturday sorts the best from the rest with the SA Championship finals on Sunday, the main 1,50 m open class cantering off at 11.30 am.
