ARCHDEACON Ndabazinhle Sibisi, rector of St Paul’s Cathedral in Durban, is to succeed Dean Fred Pitout as rector of Pietermaritzburg’s Cathedral of the Holy Nativity in January, when Pitout moves to the Cape.

Sibisi will be the first black dean of the diocese.

The Bishop of KwaZulu-Natal, Rubin Phillip, said Sibisi has had a long and distinguished ministry, having served in Newcastle, Wentworth, Inanda, Umhlali and Durban.

“The contexts and demands of each parish have been very different, yet in each instance his ministry and leadership have been well received and the fruit has been seen in the growth that has resulted.

“He has a wonderful ability to forge connection with people of widely differing age, race and social context. His situation in St Paul’s has many similarities with those of the cathedral, and the vibrant health and growth as he has taken them through a major season of transition, are a good indication of what he will bring.”

Sibisi is married to Thoko and they have one child, Nobuntu.
