Sidelined teacher stays at home

2011-08-19 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG teacher has chosen to stay at home after colleagues at her new school made racial comments and said her qualifications are fake.

The teacher, who asked to remain anonymous, said that after she and another teacher were involved in a tongue lashing in front of pupils last month the school’s principal had blamed her for the spat.

The Witness reported the teacher’s allegations last month after she was assigned to a new school in the city.

The teacher said she was not welcomed at the school after she had moved from a rural school.

At first she was instructed to shadow a grade three teacher.

She has 23 years’ experience in the field and said she felt useless and not wanted.

“Since I came to the school they didn’t trust me to teach, but I have been watching others teach.

“They don’t give me my class and I ended up not knowing what to do and [other teachers] said blacks are chancers and that I bought my qualifications in Church Street.

“My fear is that I don’t know what will happen to my salary as I have just started staying home and they don’t see that what they are doing is wrong, they are too racist …”

KwaZulu-Natal Education Department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said that in the absence of any report from the school or the district office, the department is not aware of any racial tension in the school.

“This educator is being orientated; she is not shadowing,” said Mlotshwa.
