Sidewalk Centre scraps free parking provision

2010-07-20 00:00

THE owner of the Sidewalk shopping centre in Scottsville has recently introduced a new pay-parking system.

A system was put in place in January 2010 — complete with boom-gates and a fee structure. It was aimed at enhancing security and improving the availability of parking bays.

Patrons who park at the centre will now have to pay R1 for the first hour, the group CEO of the Kamdar Group, Tahir Kamdar, told The Witness.

Customers were previously entitled to free parking for 90 minutes provided that they bought items from one of the stores in the centre and then had their ticket stamped there.

The ticket-stamping system no longer exists.

It is understood that the new system was introduced early this year as the parking area had previously been abused by non-customers.

Many non-customers also used the parking area as a rendezvous for lift clubs and as a “hang-out” venue.

Many legitimate customers were deprived of parking bays as a result.

“We have installed new equipment and in order to keep it operational and functional, we have to charge this small fee.

“The essence is not to make money, but to provide a quality service,” said Kamdar.

He said he believes that most shoppers will not incur massive parking costs.
