Sidewalk plunge: PMB man falls into metre-deep manhole

2011-02-16 00:00

A YOUNG Pietermaritzburg man escaped serious injury when he plunged into a metre-deep uncovered manhole yesterday — however, he is angry it was left open.

IT specialist David Williams said he was reading a pamphlet while walking in Greyling Street near Parklane Spar when he plunged into the hole, injuring his leg.

Showing the bandage on his right leg he said: “There were no broken bones”.

However, he said he is angry that the “pretty deep” manhole was left uncovered.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said the council is faced with the problem of people stealing metal manhole covers to sell at scrap yards.

“We are not leaving the matter unattended. We are looking at other alternatives of putting plastic covers to avoid the theft of manhole covers,” he said. He urged residents to be careful when walking on the pavements. — Witness Reporter.
