Signing up for Comrades — Beatles style

2010-09-02 00:00

DURBAN artist and Beatles fan Henk Vos filled in the very first Comrades 2011 entry form after lining up at Comrades House at 9 am yesterday.

For Vos it was much more than simply registering to run the 86th Comrades Marathon from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on 29 May 2011 — it was the first step on his long-planned personal Magical Mystery Tour, which links his passion for running with the history of the Beatles.

Vos, who is best known for his paintings of racehorses, won the inaugural art competition hosted by the Comrades Marathon and the KwaZulu-Natal Arts and Culture Department with a painting that depicts the history of the Comrades.

After leaving Comrades House yesterday, “Sergeant Pepper” Vos drove his trusty vintage Beetle Volkswagen to the Westville Pavilion Mall to paint the word “Imagine” in the Centre Court feature.

Much of the funding for his journey has come from exhibiting and selling his art in this popular mall area.

On Saturday he flies to Britain to start his pilgrimage to follow the late founder of the Beatles, John Lennon, and walk the iconic Abbey Road zebra crossing, as the group did 40 years ago for the cover of their final album, Abbey Road.

He takes with him a large painting titled Circle of Life, which he has been working on for the past 10 years.

“I often imagine walking over this crossing,” said Vos, who has this planned for his birthday on 25 September, “when I’m sixty-four.”

This will be followed by a trip toAmsterdam, the city where he was born, to run the annual marathon and then to Hamburg, which is where the “Silver Beatles”, which was the original name for the group, perfected their act, and where the Volkswagen Beetle was first produced.
