Singer Mandoza crashes Mini into a tree

2010-02-15 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — Kwaito singer Mandoza (Mduduzi Tshabalala) lost control of his yellow Mini Cooper in broad daylight yesterday and crashed into a palm tree in Roodepoort.

He was taken to hospital for treatment of a minor scrape wound to his head and was discharged at about 5 pm.

The incident happened nearly two years after he was involved in a crash in which two people died. He was found guilty in December 2008 of two charges of culpable homicide and ordered to pay damages monthly for two years to the families of the victims.

Curwyn Eaton, Mandoza’s manager, couldn’t say where the singer was travelling to when he went over the pavement from the fast lane of the street and crashed into a palm tree at about 9 am.

Skid marks were clearly visible across the road.

The vehicle apparently spun around before it lurched back to the left lane and came to a stop. The airbag was deployed.

Paramedics from Netcare 911 and ER24 provided medical help, and Mandoza was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said Mandoza sustained “minimal injuries” and was treated only for “a small cut on his head”.

Johannesburg metro police spokeswoman Inspector Edna Mamonyane said Mandoza had been taken to hospital when the police arrived and he was treated before his blood alcohol level was tested.

The metro police couldn’t confirm whether charges of reckless or negligent driving will be laid against him.
