Singing with soul

2008-06-26 00:00

The Catalina Theatre at Wilson’s Wharf hosts local songbird Jae and Zzzing, a close-harmony singing group from Newlands, in a short season directed by Hamish Kyd which opens on June 28 and runs until July 6.

Jae is a former member of the original band Zzzing and like the band, she is also from Newlands. In this production they use music to tell a story.

For both Jae and Zzzing this is a return to their roots as well as a nostalgic opportunity to join musical forces on stage. The original Zzzing is probably best known for performing in the late Mervyn Goodman’s Motown shows in the then-Playhouse Cellar.

The group has retained the name Zzzing and the new generation comprises Victor Dhudlu, Mo’Anquitine, Loncey Smith, V-Tec Majola and Kerzia de Vries.

They are already hard at work on their first album which includes numbers from the musicals Jimbo and Candyman, as well as Motown hits and original numbers.

Tickets: R75 (R45 concessions) and buy one get one free on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays. To book, phone the Catalina Theatre at 031 305 6889. Shows are at 8 pm Tuesday to Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm and 6 pm.
