THE first person in the province to undergo a life-saving bone marrow operation, were Akhona Xaba (16), and her sister, Yoliswa Xaba (14), from Mzimkhulu. Akhona is a leukaemia patient and underwent the operation on June 9, getting haemopoietic stem cells from her younger sister, Yoliswa.

She was the recipient of the first allogeneic [genetically similar] haemopoietic stem cell transplant performed in KZN. Such operations have previously been conducted in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Akhona is expected to be released next week following the success of the operation.
