Six Blue Flags on South Coast

2010-10-29 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk announced yesterday that six south coast beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status for the 2010/2011 year, up from only four south coast beaches which held the coveted status last year.

Margate, Ramsgate, Trafalgar and Marina beaches all maintained their 2009/2010 Blue Flag status at the ceremony while Umzumbe and Lucien (near Margate) beaches were new entries into the esteemed group.

At a ceremony held in Mossel Bay yesterday, Van Schalkwyk revealed that 27 beaches across South Africa had maintained a quality that warranted Blue Flag status in this, the 10th year of the programme.

“Blue Flag has grown from only three beaches in the first year to 27 for this, the 10th year of the programme,” Van Schalkwyk said.

“Growth has been significant and sustainable for most coastal municipalities and each year sees new beaches being introduced to the programme.”

Van Schalkwyk added that the Blue Flag programme has been a positive initiative for the country’s tourism industry.

“Our government, in close co-operation with the tourism industry, is continuously investing in such tourism services … to provide tourists with an exceptional experience,” he said.
