Six KZN players selected in newly announced SA schools U16 squad

2012-07-16 00:00

A SUCCESSFUL U16 hockey inter-provincial tournament closed on Saturday afternoon on Papes at Maritzburg College, with the announcement of a South African U16 side.

Western Province was the winner of the tournament, beating KZN Coastals in extra time in the last game (the results and reports will be on the School Sport pages tomorrow).

Four of the players in the squad of 16, come from Western Province A, with one from the WP B team. Runners up KZN Coastal supply three players, as do KZN Inland, despite the latter only being placed 6th in the A section.

The two beaten semi-finalists, Southern Gauteng, who lost against KZN Coastal and E Province, who lost against W Province, only supply two and one player respectively.

All three players selected from KZN Inland are Maritzburg College boys. The only other school to have more than one player is Wynberg from Cape Town, with two players in the WP A side.

The three players selected from neighbour’s KZN Coastal, are from Glenwood, Kearsney and Westville.

So, with six players in the squad of 16 from KZN, the game of hockey continues to be well coached and administered in the province.

Awards for the players that achieved the best in various positions were also named by the chairperson of SA Schools Boy’s Hockey, Wayne Marsden, before the announcement of the SA U16 team.

Best Goalkeeper — Matthew Martin (Western Province); Best Defender — Tyson Dlungwana (KZN Inland); Best Midfielder — Ryan Crowe (WP); Best Striker and Top Goal scorer — Nqobile Ntuli (KZN Coastal).
