Six-car pile-up injures 39

2012-01-19 00:00

THIRTY nine people were injured in an accident involving six vehicles in Edendale Road at 7 am yesterday.

The crash occurred when the driver of a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi travelling from Elandskop towards the city centre allegedly failed to brake during peak-hour traffic while a number of cars were stopped at a red robot. The taxi crashed into the back of a Toyota Hilux minibus taxi, which caused a chain reaction accident involving four other vehicles. Traffic police closed a section of Edendale Road to clear the area and paramedics were quickly on the scene.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said that his company, who were assisted by paramedics from Netcare, arrived and found the road completely blocked due to the accident.

“… Forty-five people were assessed and it was found that only 39 were injured. Amongst the 39 people, six were school children,” said Banks.

He said paramedics treated 15 people for suspected neck and back injuries and placed them on specialised boards to help protect their backs from further injury. The remaining 24 were treated for minor cuts and grazes and general body pains. All patients were stabilised on scene and taken to St Annes Hospital, Edendale Hospital and MediClinic.

Warrant Officer Linda Ngubane from the Pietermaritzburg accident unit said that the traffic police will open a case of negligent driving against the offending driver.
