Six men held for spate of crimes across KZN

SIX men suspected of being involved in a spate of hijackings and cash-in-transit heists in KwaZulu-Natal were remanded in custody yesterday by the Ixopo Magistrate’s Court.

Ernest Mandlekosi Khoza (42), Mduduzi Zondi (35), Nkosinathi Ndovela (31), Sibusiso Mthambo (35), Sibusiso Ndaba (32) and Christopher Mthembu (29) had their case remanded to August 29 for bail application.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the suspects were arrested between Wednesday night and Thursday morning in Ulundi, Durban West, Illovo and Mgababa during an operation carried out by the Port Shepstone and Durban organised crime units.

The men have been charged with armed robbery.

“Six pistols and one AK47 were recovered from the suspects.

“The firearms will be taken for ballistic testing to ascertain if they have been used in any other crimes. We are convinced that we will link them to 19 cash-in-transit and hijacking cases,” said Naicker.

The suspects’ most recent crime is believed to be a cash-in-transit heist in Ixopo late last month.

A security officer was robbed of his firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash were taken.

“The 19 cases against the men could escalate, especially after we receive the ballistic results. This is a major breakthrough as we believe that these men were operating all over KwaZulu-Natal and in time we may be able to link them to more cases. We expect more arrests to follow as the investigations progress,” said Naicker.
