‘Six-pack’ driver gets stiff fine

2010-03-24 00:00

AN IMBALI man whose car side-swiped the vehicle transporting Premier Zweli Mkhize on the N3 on September 28 last year, pleaded guilty yesterday to a charge that he drove his vehicle while the concentration of alcohol on his breath exceeded the legal limit.

He was fined R20 000 (or 20 months’ imprisonment), half of which was conditionally suspended for five years.

Thabani Makhathini (27) admitted in a statement that before driving his VW Polo that night, he had drunk a six-pack of Amstel beer.

When he was stopped after the collision, a breathalyser test revealed that the concentration of alcohol on his breath was 0,64 mg per 100 ml of breath. The legal limit is 0,24 ml per 100 ml of breath.

He admitted that he knew what he did was wrong.

Magistrate A. Harrison ruled that there was no reason to suspend Makhathini’s driver’s licence.

The collision with the premier’s vehicle occurred at night on the N3 northbound freeway, near Ashburton.

Makhathini was arrested by bodyguards travelling in the premier’s escort vehicle and was handed over to the police.

Nobody was injured in the accident.
