Six-piece rock band in town

2011-02-11 00:00

IN recent Maritzburg memory, only the Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters (this year’s featured act at Splashy Fen) has managed to get a gig together with that many band members. But now, local alternative six-piece rock band Disporter has its sights set on making some memorable appearances around KwaZulu-Natal.

The band consists of Rob Pool (lead guitar), Matt Mumford (rhythm guitar), Martin van Vuuren (keyboard and backing vocals), John Wood (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), Pieter Carnelley (bass) and Warren Starr (drums). The band was born in 2006, out of a text-book style cathartic jam session between friends in the attic.

The band members, all products of Maritzburg College, recorded their first EP at Arise Studios in Hilton. “You think you can play music until you hear yourself through the speakers,” quips Carnelley.

The band has performed a number of times in the Burrah, with regular appearances at Cliffy’s, as well as at parties and other functions. Their recorded songs lean towards the band’s mellow side, while the live Disporter experience, they say, contains more upbeat numbers.

Catch this new act at The Red Door on February 18 from 9.30 pm. Entrance is R10 before 9  pm and R30 thereafter.
