Sixty found guilty of sex crimes

IN just eight days last month KwaZulu-Natal police arrested 347 suspects for various crimes, including sex-related offences.

Of the arrested suspects, 60 have since been convicted of sexual offences by courts in the province.

The arrests were effected between April 5 and 12.

In a statement yesterday, police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the sentences ranged from two to 25 years’ imprisonment. Nineteen life sentences were handed down.

Some of the crimes committed were kidnapping, assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, robbery, abduction and rape.

Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu commended the police on a “job well done”.

He urged communities to work closely with the police to make sure that all perpetrators of sexual violence faced the full might of the law.

“We cannot be spectators when women and children are brutally raped and murdered.

“As communities we must unite and strongly voice our anger against the ongoing women and children abuse,” said Mchunu.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni expressed her confidence in the judicial system, saying the life-term sentences were befitting to rape.

“The sentences handed down will send a clear message to like-minded, would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and successfully prosecute them,” she said.
