Siyahlomula matrics donate uniforms to school

HAVING written their last exam means that it matrics’ last day in school and they normally go home with their uniforms signed by their classmates as a memento.

But the 2011 matrics at Siyahlomula High School in Ashdown celebrated the day differently by donating their uniforms to needy pupils.

Thabiso Sithole, the outgoing student representative council president, said they decided to give their uniforms back to the school.

“We know that we have different backgrounds and support systems, so we are handing in the uniforms to teachers so they can give them to needy pupils,” Sithole said.

Nonjabulo Hadebe, who is looking forward to reading for a BCom in accounting next year, said, “I am giving away my uniform because I know that there is a person who needs it and it will help them to focus more on their studies than focusing on what to wear in school.”

The school is in a township where most parents are unemployed and some pupils come to school without a proper uniform. The matrics said this will be their way of showing that they care for their school-mates.

“We wish to see more learners donating uniforms when they are leaving schools,” said Sithole.

Teacher Zibuyile Mshengu said the school is hoping for a better pass rate than last year’s 82%.

She said the matrics have worked hard and have shown a positive attitude.
