Sizzling action at Clover Super Classic

2010-09-18 00:00

THE heat was on at the 14th Lynford Clover Super Classic in Ixopo last weekend. The pace at the front of the field matched the blistering heat and a bumper field enjoyed the 40 km Classic through prime dairy farmland, grasslands and forests in the beautiful farming district.

Andrew Warr (Muscle & Fitness) took a sizzling win in a time of one hour, forty-six minutes and 34 seconds. Close behind in second place was Andrew Hill (TIB Insurance) in 1:47.58 with Travis Walker (DCM chrome) taking third place in 1:48.18.

Landy Puddu (Team Jeep) showed great form to take the honours in the women’s race in a time of 2:19.56. Second and third place was battled out between Amy-Jane Mundy in second in a time of 2:22.43 and Gina Treleaven third just over two minutes back.

The 20 km Intermediate race was won by Kevin Leveridge (01:17.05) and Shale Exelby (01:30.30). The remainder of the weekend was jam-packed with activity — including a 20 km trail run (won by Ian Don-Wauchope in a time of 1:30.39) and a 10 km trail run, won by Martin Dreyer (44.21).

Hill2Hill presents a big challenge to mountain bikers

KZN’s biggest one day mountain bike marathon — the Sunday Tribune Jeep Hill 2 Hill, takes place tomorrow. A strong field of SA’s best marathon racers will be lining up at the start in Hilton to take on the 100 km off-road challenge which finishes in Hillcrest at Shongweni Polo field.

Defending champion Brandon Stewart will face a tough test against the likes of the three Team Garmin riders, Mannie Heymans, Phillip Buys and Marc Bassingthwaighte, and Team Specialized’s Ben Melt Swanepoel, who now all have knowledge of the demanding Hill 2 Hill route and know the main features and pitfalls of the course.

Besides Stewart, other local riders expected to be charging the pace are Andrew Hill, who has been in superb form recently with a string of good results, Andrew Warr, Craig Paul, Pete Smith and Shaun Peschl.

The women’s race looks set to be an exciting battle. Defending champion Samantha Oosthuysen will find it tough to repeat her win against the likes of challengers Eszter Erdelyi Cluer, the former Hungarian champion now living in KZN, Yolandi du Toit, Carla Rowley and Karien van Jaarsveld — who all finished within a few minutes of each other in the Nissan Marathon in Johannesburg last weekend.

The local challenge should come from Jean Hackland, evergreen Tania Raats, Sarah van Heerden and Robyn Adendorff, while Shawna Thunder, who has been concentrating on triathlons this year, returns to the mountain biking scene and could find that her cross-training gives her an edge in the ultra-distance of the Hill 2 Hill.

Entrants should note that registration takes place today at Shongweni between 11 am – 4 pm where they will receive their race packs, batch stickers and sponsors stickers. The first batch for the start of both the 44 km at Cato Ridge Golf Club and the 100 km at World’s View will be at 6 am with the last batch setting off at 6.30 am.
