Skonk Nicholson rugby festival begins

2012-04-03 00:00

THE fifth annual Skonk Nicholson Rugby Festival begins this morning at Maritzburg College. All the U16 matches are on the main field, Goldstones, and the U14 matches are on the adjacent Snows field.

Entrance is free. There are not many festivals that are free, so if you are a schoolboy-rugby lover, it is an ideal place to watch

future stars in action.

There are no seedings and the rugby played should be exciting, with plenty of running in free-flowing games.

The matches should be played in the true spirit of sport espoused by Skonk Nicholson, who died a few weeks before the festival in 2011, in his 95th year.

Among the U16 matches, school sides to watch in parti- cular are those from hosts

Maritzburg College, Queens

College, Westville, King Edward from Johannesburg and Hilton College. The game on Goldstones this afternoon at 3.10 pm between College and Queens could well be one of the matches of the festival.

On the last day Westville play Queens at 10.50 am and this could be equally enthralling.

It is not so easy to identify the better sides at U14 level, but the traditional rugby schools will undoubtedly have good sides.

Thursday is a rest day from rugby, but there will be a

demonstration on speed testing equipment and talent-identification equipment.

This exciting new technology will be explained by Cathy de Sousa from Lifemax.

This will then be followed by a skills session run by Greg Miller from the Investec Rugby Academy.

He will also be giving a talk on mental toughness, which is so necessary if players want to play at the top level of school and provincial rugby.
