Sleep and the brain

A NEW study by U.S. and Singaporean scientists shows that too little sleep leads to faster brain ageing, and a greater risk of cognitive decline, which means a greater risk of dementia.

That adds to the already long list of risks linked to sleep deprivation: road and other accidents caused by fatigue, weight gain possibly from a disruption of appetite-regulating hormones ghrelin and leptin, reduced regulation of blood sugar, increased risk of type 2 diabetes, which is epidemic in South Africa, and elevated levels of stress hormones that increase blood pressure.

Clearly, getting enough restful sleep is key to long-term health in body and mind.
