Slow starts costs PMB Collegians, Impi run in five tries against Howard

THE Maritzburg Collegians first XV will reflect on a slow start as one of the reasons why they lost their KZN Premier Division match against the ambitious Crusaders line-up at a rain-sodden Woodburn on Friday night.

“We were 16 points down very early on and had to play catch-up from there,” Collegians chairperson Didier Claite told The Witness yesterday. “In the second half we definitely finished the stronger side, scoring two tries, and I was impressed that we never gave up.”

The returning Conal Levin, playing at inside centre, scored both Collegians’ tries.

Crusaders won 38-10 after leading 23-0 at half-time and will pose a big challenge to the unbeaten UKZN Impi in Durban North this Saturday.

It doesn’t get any easier for PMB Collegians, who will tackle reigning champs College Rovers in Durban.

The Impi left four gilt-edged try-scoring opportunities on the table against a combative Zululand Rhinos at a wet Howard College on the Durban campus on Saturday, but still managed to secure five touchdowns in their 27-8 victory.

They led 15-3 at half-time thanks to tries from captain and number eight Andre Greyvenstein, lock Wayne le Roux and flanker Theo Kruger. In the second half, prolific flank Lwazi Ngcungama added two more tries to the four he got against Harlequins last time out. Replacement back Carl Meyer kicked a conversion.

“Scrumhalf Graham Koch and lock Chris Ndlovu were outstanding,” said Impi head coach Shawn van Rensburg.

The Impi have earned maximum points from their three outings.

In other KZN Premier Division action, Durban Collegians edged Varsity College 31-28 in a thriller at the Riverside Sports Club in Durban North, and Rovers outplayed Harlequins 58-10 on the Bluff.
